About
me:
I
am currently a lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University
of Oxford Department of Educational Studies
(OUDES), where I have been since 1992. As well as work with the
Oxford post-graduate internship scheme, and supervision of M.Sc.
and D.Phil. students in mathematics education, I am Co-Director
of the University's Centre for Mathematics Education Research
(CMER). I also participate in the link with the Aga Khan University
in Karachi, Pakistan.
As
is normal in Oxford, as well as the University post, I am also
a fellow of Worcester College.
Starting
from January, 1997, for two years, I am Chair of BSRLM, the British Society for Research in Learning Mathematics.
There is more about me later.
Well, it's mostly about Mathematics Education - teaching and research. You will find:

This is my fifth year at Oxford. Before this, chronologically, I worked in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham, in the Centre for Mathematics Education at the Open University, and as a school teacher of mathematics and computer science and various other subjects. The school which I worked in last was John Howard Upper School (now, Biddenham Upper School), in Bedford, where I was Head of Faculty of Mathematics and Computing.
In my early years of teaching I worked in Kenya (Butere Girls' High School and the Aga Khan High School, Mombasa) and in the Philippines (Iligan Institute of Technology at the Mindanao State University) as part of educational development programmes. In Kenya, I taught physics (my first degree is in physics) and chemistry (learning chemistry one step ahead of my students) as well as art and music (for which I had neither talent nor expertise!). In the Philippines I taught mathematics and physics. As a result of this, I decided that I much preferred to teach mathematics and since coming back to the UK, have continued to teach mathematics.
I taught at schools in Bradford (Buttershaw Comprehensive School, Carlton Bolling School, and Wyke Manor School) and in North London (Park High School, Stanmore). During my career, computer science became popular as a school subject, and mathematics teachers were called upon to teach it. I thus found myself, again, learning a subject one step ahead of my students.
