Christmas 1995
Each year we try to spice up our Christmas card with
something to entertain our friends. We usually offer prizes and,
over the years, we've been rewarded with a growing collection
of regular solvers. Solutions are traditionally due by Twelfth
Night and are accepted by post, e-mail or in person. The winners
of this particular year's efforts were rewarded with 'untold'
riches - basically an entry in the National Lottery!
What links (in a vaguely Yule-tide manner):
- King Charles (I or II), Bohemian piety, a littoral hat-trick,
small urban development on the West bank, and hedera helix
with ilex aquifolium?
- Steve Coogan, a disgruntled moan, a manual form of sexual
harassment, a country in Europe and in Asia, a rude mechanical
with a hard centre, and nothing at all?
- John, Jack and Jim (where one is a pedestrian, one a lion-tamer
and the third a spanner) to the Jaworskis?
- a lifting device, a trans-Atlantic conveyance, a pride of
the Great Western, and an unreturnable opening play?
- Amtrak's finest, an epicurean gathering, the way in, and a
more formal way in?
- long, dapper, and audible pelt?
